New York State Driver's Manual: Official Guide & Study Companion
Searching for the New York DMV handbook, NY DMV manual, or New York DMV practice test? An AI DMV practice test built around the New York handbook is available free at Shoro AI.
DWAI - Driving While Ability Impaired: 0.05-0.07% BAC (traffic infraction)
DWI - Driving While Intoxicated: 0.08%+ BAC (criminal misdemeanor)
Most states have only one threshold. The DMV written exam tests both numbers as separate questions - and the consequences differ significantly. A DWAI is a traffic infraction, not a criminal offense. A DWI is a misdemeanor. Applicants who know only the 0.08% standard miss the DWAI question on nearly every exam sitting.
The New York State Driver's Manual, published by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, covers both impairment thresholds, Junior Driver License restrictions, and New York State Thruway driving .

Junior Driver 9pm Curfew Is Earlier Than Most States: New York's Junior Driver License prohibits driving between 9pm and 5am - a 9pm curfew start that is significantly earlier than the midnight curfew most other states use. The exam tests the exact hours because applicants from other states consistently assume midnight.
Why New York's Driver's Manual Is the Only Source That Covers Both BAC Thresholds
40 questions (20+20) - every one from this manual. New York DMV builds the knowledge test exclusively from the official Driver's Manual.
DWAI and DWI are two separate offenses with two separate thresholds. No other major state uses this two-tier system. The exam tests both numbers and both legal categories.
Junior Driver 9pm curfew is New York-specific. Earlier than any other major state's GDL curfew - the exam tests the exact hour and applicants from other states consistently miss it.
Dual-section pass requirement demands full coverage. Both signs and rules sections must be passed separately - selective study that covers one section but not the other results in a failed exam regardless of overall score.
From New York City's Cross Bronx and LIE to the Adirondack two-lane routes on US-9 near Lake Placid, the New York State Driver's Manual covers the full range of what New York roads and the DMV's dual-section exam require.
