For ordinary Class D supervised practice, there is no learner-permit card to replace. If the lost credential is a Youth Operator or Class D driver license, use the DMV duplicate-license process. If it is a motorcycle learner permit, follow the replacement instructions for that actual permit type.
| What was lost? | What to do |
|---|---|
| Class D learner-permit card | Nothing to replace. New Hampshire does not issue a standard Class D learner-permit card. |
| Youth Operator or Class D license | Use the DMV duplicate-license process. The official duplicate application is DSMV 637, and the statutory fee for a duplicate photographic license is $20. |
| Motorcycle learner permit | Use the DMV process for the motorcycle permit rather than the Class D learner process. |
For a duplicate photographic driver license, use the current DMV duplicate application, DSMV 637. Do not use DSMV 450 as the duplicate-license form. Bring any identification or supporting documents the DMV requires for your case.
For supervised Class D practice, keep carrying the proof of age required by RSA 263:25. The learner-practice privilege is not tied to possession of a permit card.
Use the DMV duplicate-license process rather than assuming the online-renewal process will issue a replacement. The official duplicate application is DSMV 637, and the DMV can confirm the current submission method for your situation.
A police report is not listed as a standard requirement in the DMV duplicate-license rule. You may still choose to report a theft if you are concerned about identity misuse.
What should you do if your license is damaged but still readable? If the credential is damaged enough that it may not scan, display information clearly, or be accepted, use the duplicate-license process instead of waiting for it to become unusable.
If you are only learning to drive under the Class D supervised-practice rule, there is no permit card to wait for. Continue to meet the proof-of-age and supervision requirements in RSA 263:25.
If you lost a Youth Operator/Class D driver license or an actual motorcycle permit, follow the DMV replacement process for that credential and carry the document the DMV requires while driving.
Contact DMV for replacement instructions before relying on a photo, scan, or photocopy of the temporary document. The DMV can tell you what document you should carry until the permanent credential is available.
If you are temporarily outside New Hampshire, contact Driver Licensing before submitting the duplicate request. DSMV 637 is the duplicate-license form, but the DMV should confirm the submission and identity steps for an out-of-state applicant.
New Hampshire's duplicate-license rule does not set one guaranteed mailing time. Ask the DMV what temporary document applies to your transaction and when the replacement card is expected before you leave or submit the request.

"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
