A Bozeman permit was delivered to a wrong rural route address due to a data entry error. The applicant requested a reissue. The corrected card arrived 12 days later. The temporary paper permit was valid for driving in the interim.

Montana MVD online services cover more than pre-application and appointment scheduling. Depending on the transaction and eligibility, online services can also include renewal or replacement, address updates, driver records and other account services. For a first-time learner permit, online tools mainly help you prepare and schedule; the testing and first issuance still require the applicable in-person steps.
No. The pre-application prepares information for the transaction, but it does not complete a first learner-permit application. You still need the required in-person document review, testing and first issuance steps.
For a first-time learner permit, this is the practical split between online preparation and in-person processing:
| Task | Can Be Done Online? | MVD Visit Needed? |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-application | Yes | No, for this step |
| Appointment scheduling | Yes | No, for this step |
| First-time document review | No | Yes |
| Vision screening | No | Yes |
| First-time knowledge test | Generally no for regular applicants | Yes; approved driver-education routes can differ |
| Photo and signature capture | No | Yes |
| First learner-permit issuance | No | Yes |
| Replacement | For eligible transactions | Depends on eligibility and method |
| Address update | Available online for eligible records | Not always |
| Driving record | Yes | No |
| Mobile ID setup | Done on a compatible phone after an eligible credential is issued | No separate MVD visit just for setup |
If you are under 18, parental consent is part of the application process. Use the dedicated Application Form guidance for form details and the Montana permit document guide for supporting-document requirements.
Regular first-time applicants should not expect to take the knowledge test from home. The standard process includes in-person testing, although approved driver-education testing routes can work differently.
Eligible drivers can update their address in Montana MVD's online services. Updating the record does not automatically give you a new card showing the address; if you want the new address printed on the credential, use the applicable replacement process.
Montana does not provide a dedicated live postal-tracking tool for the permanent permit card. After issuance, online driver-record services can show credential details, but they are not the same as package tracking. For mailing timelines and what to do if the card does not arrive, use the processing-time guidance in the Appointments & SOS cluster.
Montana Mobile ID is a separate digital-credential service for an already issued eligible credential. It does not replace the first-time permit application, testing or appointment process. For setup and use rules, see the official Montana Mobile ID page and the dedicated Digital Permit guide.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
