The RMV learner's permit test has 25 questions. You need 18 correct (72%) to pass. You get 25 minutes total. Study the Class D Driver's Manual before testing. Download the Learner's Permit Exam Overview PDF for full details on test structure.
The MassDOT system randomly pulls your 25 questions from a pool of roughly 500 possible questions. Every test is different. Multiple-choice with 4 options per question on the Automated Test Station kiosk.
The RMV's public permit guidance explains the question count, time limit and passing score, but it does not promise a skip-and-return feature. Do not plan your test around being able to leave a question and reopen it later. Answer each question carefully as it appears.
Can you change an answer after selecting it? The RMV does not publish a general rule saying a submitted answer can always be reopened. Treat your choice as final unless the testing screen itself clearly gives you a review or change option.
Can you use notes or the Driver's Manual during the test? Not during the online exam. Massachusetts requires you to leave reference materials and other electronics out of the test room and says not to search the internet for answers. At an RMV Service Center, follow the testing-station instructions and put study materials away before the exam starts.
The Massachusetts permit exam covers road rules, signs and markings, right-of-way, alcohol and drug laws, Junior Operator rules, and other safety laws in the Driver's Manual.
The RMV does not publish a fixed number of questions for each topic on every exam. For deeper sign coverage, use the Road Sign Questions article. For the rules applicants commonly find difficult, use Hardest Test Topics.
The standard exam gives you 25 minutes for 25 questions. Keep moving, but read penalty and right-of-way questions carefully.
For pacing, time-expiration rules and accommodation options, use the dedicated Test Time Limit article.
At an RMV Service Center, the standard permit exam is delivered on the RMV's computerized testing system. Eligible applicants may instead take the exam online after the required application and identity-verification steps.
The online exam requires an enabled camera and uses photo monitoring during the session.
For the full in-person vs. online process, device requirements and location rules, see the dedicated Test Location & Format guide.
For the standard Class D exam, yes on the core rules: 25 questions, 25 minutes and 18 correct answers to pass. The delivery is different. Service Center testing uses the RMV computer system, while the online exam adds camera, browser and room-monitoring requirements. Approved accommodations can change how the exam is delivered without changing the normal passing score.
Massachusetts enforces one of the tightest permit test time limits in New England at 25 minutes for 25 questions. Rhode Island gives applicants 40 minutes for 20 questions. New Hampshire and Vermont offer untimed tests. The Massachusetts time pressure catches applicants from neighboring states off guard, especially those who studied Rhode Island or Vermont materials expecting a more relaxed format.
