Teens under 18 must complete 20 hours of supervised driving, including at least 2 hours at night, before applying for an intermediate license. Adults 18+ skip mandatory logging entirely.
Iowa's Graduated Driver's License (GDL) system requires specific practice time with a permit. The total hours needed depend on your age.
These are separate requirements. Iowa's GDL progression requires 20 supervised driving hours, including at least 2 after sunset. Parent-Taught Driver Education requires 30 hours of street or highway driving, including 3 at night. Iowa DOT says 20 of the Parent-Taught hours can count toward the GDL supervised-driving requirement.
They start after the intermediate license is issued. Iowa requires 20 supervised hours, including two between sunset and sunrise, before the intermediate license. Then the driver completes another 10 supervised hours, including two at night, while holding the intermediate license before moving to a full license. Iowa DOT full-license requirements.
Not all driving time qualifies for your log. Here's what counts toward the required practice hours in Iowa.
Review full rules in the Iowa Driver's Manual PDF before starting your supervised practice.
Iowa DOT uses driving between sunset and sunrise for required nighttime hours. That applies to the two nighttime hours needed before an intermediate license and the two additional nighttime hours required while holding the intermediate license before a full license. Iowa DOT supervised driving guidance.
You have two options for tracking your supervised driving hours. The Iowa DOT does check your submitted log.
For the regular GDL path, Iowa DOT places responsibility on the parent or guardian to make sure the required supervised hours are completed. Keep a clear log that the parent or guardian can verify. Parent-Taught Driver Education has its own formal driving-log requirements and submission process.
You may build supervised driving experience with different adults as long as each person qualifies under Iowa's supervision rules. Record each session clearly so the total hours and nighttime hours can be verified later.
For the regular GDL path, Iowa requires the supervised-driving hours, but the log in Iowa DOT's Parent's Supervised Driving Program is a tracking tool for families rather than a separate document listed as mandatory at the intermediate-license appointment. A parent or guardian provides the required written consent when the teen upgrades.
Parent-Taught Driver Education is different: its 30-hour driving log is a formal course requirement, and Iowa DOT identifies Form 431228 for that program.
Track each drive accurately so your family can confirm the required total and nighttime hours. Do not mix the regular 20-hour GDL requirement with the Parent-Taught Driver Education 30-hour log.
| License Stage | Required Supervised Hours | Night Hour Minimum |
|---|---|---|
| Instruction Permit | 20 Hours Total | 2 hours |
| Intermediate License | 10 Additional Hours | 2 hours |
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
