Alberta requires the entire Class 7 learner's licence application process to be completed in person at a registry agent office.
There is no government-approved online service to apply for a first learner's licence, upload identification, or take the knowledge test remotely.
Alberta's driver licensing is decentralized, operated through over 200 private registry agents under Service. Alberta oversight. While some related services are digital, the core permit application is not.
One Fort McMurray applicant learned the hard way: Registry portal crashed after fee paymentno booking confirmation generated, slot not reserved. Fee refund and 4-day rebooking wait. Screenshot the Registry booking confirmation immediately after payment; portal crashes during high-demand periods are documented.
Example of online vs.
in-person confusion: A Calgary applicant spent an hour on the eServices portal trying to find the 'apply for learners permit online' option, only to learn they must visit an agent like AMA or a registry in Shawnessy.
| Service | Online? | Where to complete it |
|---|---|---|
| First Class 7 application | No | Registry agent |
| Class 7 knowledge test | No | Registry agent |
| Eligible driver's licence renewal | Check current availability | Alberta eServices when available, otherwise a registry agent |
| Lost or stolen licence replacement | Normally no | Registry agent; a remote application is available in limited cases for people temporarily outside Alberta or medically homebound |
| Appointment booking | Depends on the registry | Individual registry website or phone |
| Official temporary licence after an eligible online renewal | Yes, when online renewal is available | My Digital Downloads; it can be displayed on a mobile device or printed |
Class 7 is one of the licence classes that can qualify for Alberta's online renewal service when the service is available and all eligibility rules are met. As of September 12, 2026, Alberta's official renewal page says online driver's licence renewals are temporarily disabled, so eligible drivers currently need to use a registry agent until the service is restored.
Do you need an Alberta.ca Account for online driver-licence services? For online renewal when it is available, the address on the Motor Vehicles System must match the address on your verified Alberta.ca Account. Creating an account does not replace the in-person process for a first Class 7 licence.
No online pre-upload step replaces the document check for a first Class 7 application. Bring the required acceptable identification and other documents to the registry agent for the in-person licensing process.
Alberta does not provide online tracking for the first Class 7 card. After the initial application is completed in person, card-delivery timing and digital-document rules are covered in the dedicated Processing Time and Digital Permit guides.
There is no dedicated 'Alberta Registry Agent' government mobile app for learner's permits.
Some large registry offices may have their own apps or online booking systems.
For Alberta permit process details, see the Alberta permit guide.
The Alberta learner's permit guide has full eligibility details.
Virtual testing is not available.
Example of online vs.
in-person confusion: An Edmonton student searched for a 'virtual permit test' app, downloaded a third-party practice app, and mistakenly believed they could take the official test on their phone, causing a failed registry visit.
| Step | Action | Location |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Study | Review the Driver's Guide and take practice tests. | Online / At Home |
| 2. Apply & Test | Bring documents, pass knowledge and vision tests. | Registry Agent Office |
| 3. Receive Licence | Get temporary paper permit; plastic card mailed later. | Registry Agent Office / Mail |
Call your chosen registry agent in Red Deer or Lethbridge the day before your visit to confirm they have a functioning test kiosk.
A common complaint is arriving to find the system down, forcing a reschedule.
Bring at least one acceptable Alberta residence document. It may be presented on paper or electronically and must meet Alberta's current name, address, and date requirements.

Schedule your test for a weekday morning.
Late afternoon and Saturday visits at busy Calgary registries often involve 2+ hour waits, even with an appointment.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
